Stop your pain with these natural solutions.
We’ve all been there—suffering from cramps, back pain, arthritis or muscle injuries. Given our busy schedules we’re willing to do almost anything to relieve the pain and get on with the day. Unfortunately, this usually means popping a quick painkiller. But these pills may be putting your body in a vulnerable position. Overuse of common painkillers like aspirin, ibuprofen and Celebrex can strip away protective agents, and interfere with biological processes leaving fragile organs, like your kidneys, stomach, intestines, even your heart and brain—vulnerable to sometimes life threatening damages. As an alternative, there are natural pain relief options that are easy, affordable and generally much safer for daily use.
The Painful Truth
Most of our pain is caused by inflammation, regardless of the condition or injury. So it makes sense that conventionally we take over-the-counter anti-inflammatory agents to address the pain that accompanies it.
You may have seen these common painkillers referred to as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). NSAIDs like aspirin and ibuprofen reduce inflammation by counteracting the body’s production of certain prostaglandins. But prostaglandins are critical because, among many uses, they protect the stomach and intestines from harmful acids. They also play a key role in kidney function and blood clotting. So while you’re reducing pain, you’re also creating vulnerability inside your body.
As a result you may end up suffering from common side effects like vomiting, nausea, constipation, diarrhea and shortness of breath. But what you should really be worried about is more severe effects like ulcers, internal bleeding, and kidney and liver failure. According to the National Kidney Foundation around 10% of kidney failures per year are linked to overuse of NSAIDs.
Through an attempt to minimize the harmful effects of painkillers, modified versions of NSAIDs like prescription Celebrex are showing even worse, potentially life threatening risks, like blood clots and reduced blood flow to the brain which can cause stroke, aneurysms, or dementia.
Relieve Your Pain Naturally
Unless your pain is simply unbearable, it may be worth trying some of these proven methods for natural pain relief before resorting to drugs:
1. Increase Omegas for pain relief
Omega-3s have already wowed us with their superstar health benefits, but these essential fatty acids are also proven to be one of the best for natural pain and inflammation relief. In one study of 250 patients, 59% were able to swap their OTC pain relievers for fish oil containing the omega-3 essential fatty acids EPA and DHA. The recommended dose of EPA and DHA can range between 1500 to 5000 mg total per day with meals. We like Super-EPA, a high quality fish oil containing highly concentrated amounts of EPA and DHA with 600 mg of Omega-3s per softgel.
Not to be overlooked, omega-6s are also helpful as an anti-inflammatory. Omega-6 gamma linolenic acid (GLA) plays a role in regulating inflammation on a continuous basis, thus keeping creeping pain at bay. GLA may be an ideal option for rheumatoid arthritis to help reduce swollen joints and associated pain.
2. Relieve pain with Magnesium
Magnesium performs over 350 functions in your body, so we’re thrilled this marvelous mineral is finally starting to get the attention it deserves. And since nearly 80% of us are magnesium deficient, we could all do with a little extra!
Magnesium has long been touted for its constipation benefits, but it does so much more. It can relieve menstrual cramps, calm heart palpitations and act as a muscle relaxer. It has even been proven for natural pain relief associated with migraines. According to one study, 60 patients suffering from migraines had pain lessened by nearly 40%. It also improved their sensitivity to light and sounds.
Magnesium supplements are extremely affordable, but one formula doesn’t fit all. Make sure you find one with targeted cofactors for your specific needs. We like Mag-Key, which delivers four of the most absorbable forms of magnesium including malate—shown to reduce pain for fibromyalgia patients. You can also try an Epsom salt (magnesium sulfate) bath to help relax and ease tight muscles.
3. Get pain relief with Procaine
First discovered by Romanian gerontologist Dr. Ana Aslan, procaine has been used successfully for over 60 years for its anti-aging benefits, including natural relief from joint pain. Patients in Aslan’s initial study not only achieved natural pain relief, but also had mental and physical improvements like improved mobility, balanced mood and enhanced libido. Derived from two vitamin-like compounds, PABA (para-aminobenzoic acid) and DEAE (diethylaminoethanol), procaine is absorbed by damaged cells and then repairs them from the inside out, enabling the cell to expel toxins and hold onto the necessary healing nutrients already in your body. In the 1960s, world leaders and celebrities flocked to Romania to get treatment, but today anyone can reap the benefits of procaine when using products like Ultra H-3. This anti-aging product has already helped thousands of Americans improve joint discomfort, the reviews are incredible!
4. Reduce pain with Earthing
Throughout time, humans have strolled, sat, stood and slept on the ground—the skin of our bodies in constant physical contact with the surface of the Earth. But today’s modern lifestyle has disconnected us from the Earth’s healing energy and its natural grounding effects. Research shows the Earth’s negatively charged electrons defuse the positively-charged free radicals in our bodies that cause inflammation. In fact, one study in 2004 reported 11 out of 12 subjects had natural pain relief after grounding (the act of connecting to the earth’s energy through indoor or outdoor methods).
If you don’t have the time or place to roam barefoot, consider Earthing technology to gain the positive effects of grounding or “vitamin G” while working, relaxing or sleeping indoors. Plugging in with Earthing products like bed sheets, mats or wrist bands can help you get a better night’s sleep while reducing inflammation and pain.
