Shakedown Challenge Journal: Day 2

Shakedown blogs2Day 2 can sometimes be a challenge because it’s been a full 24 hours and your body has started to realize what’s going on. “What? You’re for real- no coffee??” A few of us admitted to battling a headache last night (an unfortunate, very normal side effect at the beginning of a detox). Everybody came armed with veggies again, and snack time has become a welcome break in the day.

Variety is the Spice of Life

We gather around the veggie-spread, Chris telling stories about his daughter’s latest adventure—she’s 3, so there’s always something going on, Carol telling us random headlines and factoids— it’s Elvis’ birthday, incase you hadn’t heard.

We were wild and did 2 smoothies today with alittle extra somethin’-somethin’. For breakfast it was simple strawberry, but I dropped a piece of fresh ginger in! It was a hit! (I did 1 piece per serving) For lunch, it was Fireside Cinnamon-Cherry (cherries with a bit of cinnamon). We found that the cherry smoothie needs ice, to give it that really fluffy n frozen texture. I also mixed up a salad for everybody for an afternoon snack. I sliced up some raw veggies (tomatoes, red/yellow/orange/green peppers, cucumbers) and sprinkled them with alittle apple cider vinegar and flaxseed oil. It was quite yummy!

Word on the Street About Day 2

Carol: “I had a challenge to hurdle last night when a friend, who didn’t know I’m doing the Shakedown, brought me some homemade cookies…with frosting! I didn’t even eat a nibble! This morning, I felt less groggy and not as hungry as I usually do in the mornings. The afternoon slump did hit, but I made sure to have plenty of veggies and cranwater. Really, I’m shocked at how smooth it’s going this time around. I think doing it with a group is really helping.”

Chris: “Two thumbs up on the salad! I think that little bit of vinegar helped quiet my craving for something salty. It’s also nice to get in a variety, rather than just sliced veggies day after day. Overall, things are going good!”

Emily: “I’m feeling more energized today and my stomach is definitely less grumbly.”

Kelley: “Last night was alittle tough because I was craving sweets! But I kept myself busy and got through the night successfully! I woke up this morning feeling more energized than normal and excited to continue on to Day 2! I feel like I’ve gotten over the first day hump and my journey will get easier! Feelin’ lighter already!”

And as for me…Today was definitely easier than yesterday. I think the hardest part about the beginning couple of days is fighting the battle in my head. I look at the clock and it says 11:00am. Usually at this time, I’m white knucklin’ it to lunchtime! But with the breakfast smoothie, plus the veggie buffet, I’m not hungry. Even still, my mind  thinks it’s time to eat and I started feeling anxious and antsy. (Strange how our minds attach to an idea, isn’t it??) Like Kelley said, I kept myself (my mind) occupied and made it through without any trouble. Tomorrow it’ll probably be the same battle, but for today I did great! And I’ll fight tomorrow’s battle…well, tomorrow.

That’s the thing, Shakers. Take one day at a time! Tomorrow’s challenge will come, don’t you worry about that. Be happy in your successes today!

    Hey everyone! My friend and I also started the Smoothie Shakedown this week and are currently on day 3. I have had a different experience than what most of you describe. Day 1 was extremely difficult. By 2:00 I was having a very hard time thinking and the rest of the day didn’t get too much better. However, yesterday was much better and today is just getting started. One thing I’m having difficulty with is coming up with good snacks. I’ve been having a couple of hard boiled eggs each day (wow…never thought they could taste so good!) and some carrots. If you could give me some good specific suggestions as to what your snack time consists of I would really appreciate it.

      Hi Kathy! Glad you have a friend to do it with. It really does make things better when you have a ‘partner in crime’. The beginning is the hardest part- trust me! It gets better 🙂

      Great idea! Let’s talk snacks in the Day 3 blog! Until I get it written and posted today, check out pg. 15 of your Shakedown Guide. There’s a list of veggies. ANY of these can be on the “snack buffet” (as we like to call it). Enjoy them raw, steamed, as a salad, etc.

    Hi! I, too, started the Shakedown this week. So far my biggest complaint is … gas! Is anyone else experiencing this and is this normal? I’ve added in Flora-Key and psyllium husk to my cranwater. Is this the culprit?! Thanks!

      Hi Roxie! Happy you stopped in! And I’m glad you’re Shakin’ with us!! 🙂

      Gas is an unfortunate, and somewhat common, side effect of detox. (So don’t worry!) Or you might just be getting too much fiber if you’re adding psyllium to your cran-water AND doing chia seeds n flaxoil in your smoothies.

      Have you visited the Smoothie Shakedown forum?? That’s a great resource cause everyone on there is going through the same thing, and you can bet someone is having the same problem. The moderators are veteran ‘Shakers and are always ready to give alittle advice. 🙂

        Thank you! I haven’t checked the forum out, but I will ASAP. Quick question: would you recommend I take out one of the fibers I’m using (yes, I am also adding chia seeds and flax oil to my smoothies)? Or is it okay to continue using all and it will work itself out over the course of the shakedown? Today is Day 3 for me. Thanks again!

          Hmmm…it might work itself out, but we would still recommend cutting back. The oil is fine, but you probably only need one source of the fiber (psyllium or chia). One thing I will say about the psyllium is that it can be harsh for some people’s systems. (I’m included in that bunch.) Try cutting out one or the other, and see how that goes.

      Good morning, Roxie! You can have 1 cup of organic coffee on the Shakedown. (No sugary add-ins though…) But you do have to skip the green tea. Some people find that Dandelion Root Tea is a nice replacement though, if you must. (Only 1 cup a day of that, as well.) 🙂

    What about decaf coffee? And what is wrong with Green Tea?

      Decaf or regular coffee is fine; whichever floats your boat! Green Tea– although it’s touted as a high source of antioxidants– carries a pretty high amount of caffeine. Most teas are also high in copper, which can result in estrogen excess and water retention.

    Thanks! I guess what I’m asking about the decaf coffee is can you have that in unlimited quantities, like you can herbal tea? I understand only 1 cup of regular (non-decaf) coffee is allowed per day, but can you drink any amount of decaf? Thanks!!

      Ok, gotcha! No, across the board, on the unlimited coffee– decaf or not. (I know; I cringed too when I first learned that rule.) Here’s why: Coffee (decaf or regular) is one of the most toxic substances for your liver to metabolize. The little guy is going through a detox, we don’t want to heavy-up the load! Also, coffee is super acidic and can do more harm than good for your shocked system.

      1 cup a day, sista’!

    Does GLA, CLA or flax oil make you energized? Notice I’ve been wide awake/unable to sleep at night when I shouldn’t be after having a shake and above supplements for dinner.

      Those supplements shouldn’t make you wired (they aren’t stimulants), but many people do find that they get an incredible amount of energy from the smoothies. You may want to try taking some magnesium at bedtime which can be very calming for the system.
