Candida overgrowth is making a comeback. Once the darling health concern of the 80s and 90s, Candida – a member of the fungus family — is staging a revival. And lest you think this is an over exaggeration, think again. Fungus is the most powerful and organized micro-organism – spores are generally so hardy that they can stay dormant for years and still retain their regenerative potential.
Fortunately, few fungus species cause illness in humans. But among those that do, the Candida group is the most dangerous and troublesome. In November 2016, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reported the first US cases of a drug-resistant and sometimes-fatal form of this disease called Candida auris, with a predilection for immune-compromised patients. The Main Culprit: Candida Albicans
Among the over 20 varieties of Candida which can cause infection in humans, Candida albicans is the most common for health complaints. It is a fungal yeast (mold) present everywhere in the environment, and to some degree, in the human body. Natural bacteria in the stomach and intestines actually feed upon Candida yeast, in its more benign form, to keep it in check. But when this yeast flips into overgrowth, health problems arise in various parts of the body, including the skin, nails, mouth, respiratory system, genitals, urinary tract or blood.
When Candida albicans goes into overdrive, it is called Candidiasis or Candida overgrowth. Symptoms of this infection can include: itching, rash and redness of tissues, fatigue, headaches, joint problems, urinary infections and unwanted weight gain.
Candida soreness and a white coating in the mouth or throat are called Thrush. Skin yeast infections manifest itchy red skin and include some cases of diaper rash. Genital infections with whitish discharge are called yeast infections. Gastrointestinal Candidiasis can manifest as belching, bloating, indigestion and intestinal problems. Respiratory Candidiasis may cause cough, sore throat, excessive mucus or sinus congestion. If this fungus enters the bloodstream, it is called invasive Candidiasis or Candidemia, which can cause serious and widespread systemic symptoms.
Why is Candida Overgrowth Making a Comeback?
A century ago, Candida overgrowth was uncommon. During that era, people ate foods that were naturally grown and alive with energy. In addition, people were not exposed to GMO foods, fast foods, processed foods high in sugar and corn syrup, pesticides, herbicides, antibiotics and other toxic materials. Most people know that an over-abundance of antibiotics can encourage a yeast infection. Therefore, good hygiene and the strategic avoidance of infections is highly recommended to prevent the need for antibiotics and thereby keep fungus overgrowth at bay.

Also of interest in our age of wireless technology is a recent report from Swiss researchers who found that toxic molds greatly flourish when stimulated by microwaves and other forms of electromagnetic radiation. After exposing mold to these energies, they “discovered that not only the biotoxins in the culture had increased more than 600 fold, but also had increased to a more potent and virulent form of biotoxin.” (2) This suggests that electromagnetic radiation should be reduced as much as possible, especially at home in sleeping areas.

Patients who seek medical advice for Candida overgrowth are generally prescribed anti-fungal medications, reportedly effective for reducing or alleviating symptoms in the short term. But Candida often recurs repeatedly, despite medications. Fungus is so adaptive to its environment that it can become resistant to medication within days. So it is key for Candida sufferers to investigate the various root causes of Candida overload. While there are many complicating factors involved with the elderly, premature newborns and immune-compromised people, the root causes of Candida for most healthy people can be as simple as diet and lifestyle choices.
Dietary Recommendations for Candida overgrowth
Beating aggressive Candida back into a benign and dormant yeast is a journey towards common sense. A high carbohydrate diet should be replaced with non-gluten grains like rice, quinoa, buckwheat, millet and amaranth. Leafy green and fibrous vegetables are important for vitality and immunity.
